I started a new career in June and I kept my old one too, so I have been VERY busy. I hope to get back into the swing of things one day soon. Free To Be...Not Anymore

Great Article by Marlo Thomas that I read on The Huffington Post website...

Just how many dead teenagers, driven to end their own lives, is it going to take for adults to stand up and say,What the hell is going on? There was a time when the words "Free to Be" embodied a hope that whatever a kid was, was good enough. But "freedom" doesn't describe the world of this generation. Or of their parents. One of those parents wrote to me on my Facebook page.

"Hi, Marlo," wrote Kevin Jacobsen of New York. "Our son Kameron was bullied relentlessly and committed suicide on January 18th. He was 14. In lieu of flowers, we asked for donations to go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, my mom's favorite for decades. I know you're busy, but just wondering if you could take a look at our son. We have nothing else to lose."

He then posted the link to a website he'd built to honor his son, called KindnessAboveMalice.org. I logged on, but could barely look at the child's face. He was beautiful.

Thirty-seven years -- and two generations of children -- after the creation of Free to Be... You and Me, I can't help but remember the beautiful words lyricist Bruce Hart wrote that anchored the opening anthem:

"Every boy in this land grows to be his own man,
In this land, every girl grows to be her own woman."

Kameron will never grow to be his own man.

For all the walls we thought we'd broken down with Free to Be -- and all the stereotypes we thought we'd shattered -- children today are not free to be anything they want to be, nor anything they are, and they are dying for it. And no beautiful lyric can fix that.

According to current statistics, one out of every four teenagers across America is bullied in their neighborhoods and schools; 160,000 students stay home from school every day because of their fear of being bullied; and each month, nearly 300,000 students are physically attacked inside their secondary schools.

Online, things are even worse: 43 percent of kids are cyber-bullied, while 53 percent admit to having said something mean and hurtful to another kid online.

Then came that tragic September -- 2010 -- when over a period of just three weeks, nine gay or questioning youths -- all male, average age 15 -- were "bullied to death," committing suicide, no longer able to endure the never-ending harassment from their peers.

Like many people, much of what I know about bullying is what I read in the headlines: 15-year-old Irish migrant Phoebe Prince of Massachusetts, hangs herself in the stairwell of her family apartment, after yet another day of relentless bullying. The harassment continued on her Facebook memorial page. Or just this month, 14-year-old Ambriel Bowen of York, Pennsylvania, commits suicide at home when the daily terrorizing by bullies -- which included two black eyes and a broken nose -- becomes too overwhelming to bear.

I called Kevin Jacobsen after I read his Facebook post and my heart broke as he recounted his son's tragic story.

"Bullying is not the same old issue it used to be," Kevin said, softly. "With cell phones and social networking, it's turned into an around-the-clock problem that our kids cannot escape from. And the other thing that's different is that the bullies can be anonymous. And without that face-to-face encounter, it's impossible to stop them."

When I hung up with Kevin, I re-read his post, and seeing his mention of St. Jude made me think about how different the children are there. I've seen compassion, not cruelty, for each other. I've seen four- and five-year-old girls and boys offering hugs and giving comfort to two- and three-year-olds, telling them that they understand the pain they're going through, and that they will be alright.

So the idea that healthy children should die, not from an errant cancer cell, but because of the abject malice of another child, is something we need to take on. And stop.

Kevin Jennings, the assistant deputy secretary at the Department of Education, told me that most parents of bullied children have no idea about the anguish their sons and daughters are enduring, because the kids aren't talking. They're ashamed to admit it, because they think it's a sign of weakness, and they want to handle it themselves.

But if more parents would get into the game, Jennings said, we might be able to turn things around. He told me that the majority of parents haven't been trained to look for signs of bullying in their child's life. But they need to. And they can start by asking themselves a few questions:

Does your child not want to ride the school bus any more?
Does your child often wake in the morning complaining about stomach aches and asking to stay home from school?
Are your child's friends not coming around so much any more?
Has your child stopped receiving invitations to parties?

Most important, said Jennings, is if you suspect your child is being bullied, you must become proactive, and try to get that child to talk.

And I think we all have to start to talk.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years about tackling problems, it's that the first thing you need to do is spark the conversation. So let's start talking about bullying. With our neighbors. With our friends and family. With fellow parents at PTA meetings. And with each other -- right here. Let me hear what you think. It's time to take bullying down.

In the meantime, if you're worried that a child in your life might be a victim -- or is, in fact, the bully -- there are some helpful thoughts at such websites as stopbullying.gov. I'm sure there are countless other sites, and I'd like to know about those, as well. We don't have the time -- or any more kids' lives -- to waste.

It's been nearly four decades since the debut of the Free to Be message. But I 'm hopeful that, together, we can realize that place that Bruce Hart imagined where:

"Every boy in this land grows to be his own man,
In this land, every girl grows to be her own woman."

A land where the children are free... from bullying.

These people are so messed up. Did you catch where they say we killed him by disgrace because "heroes should only be confronted in the battlefield"? Hopefully, they got some info from the scene that will lead to more captures of these lunatics.

New Orleans Bacon Pralines

I saw this recipe on The Food Network Show, "Five Ingredient Fix" and knew I had to try it. As my friend, Bunny has said..."Everything is better with Bacon". The bacon really gives it that great combo of sweet and salty. They are soooo good. You guys should try them. YUMMY! I included the full recipe below. However, I just cooked my bacon in the microwave. I hate cooking it in the oven. Too much clean up!

Ingredients...

1 pound thick-cut bacon
3 tablespoons plus 2 cups light brown sugar
3 tablespoons plus 2 tablespoons butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 1/4 cups pecans, roughly chopped
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon table salt

Special equipment: candy thermometer

Directions...
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 1 rimmed sheet pan with heavy foil and another with parchment paper.

Place a baking rack over the foil-lined sheet pan and arrange the bacon slices across the rack next to each other, but not overlapping. Bake until crispy, 15 to 18 minutes. When cool enough to handle, finely chop and set aside.

Reduce the oven temp to 350 degrees F.

In a small saucepan over moderate heat, melt 3 tablespoons butter and 3 tablespoons brown sugar, about 1 minute. Add the pecans and combine until the pecans are coated. Pour out onto another unlined sheet pan and bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Let cool.

Place the remaining 2 cups brown sugar into a 3-quart heavy saucepan, being careful to not get sugar on the sides of the pan. Add the cream, the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and salt and cook over very low heat (do not let simmer), stirring frequently with a rubber spatula, until the sugar is dissolved, 10 to 15 minutes. Wash down any sugar crystals on the side of the pan with a pastry brush dipped in cold water. Clamp on a candy thermometer to the saucepan and boil the syrup over moderately-high heat until it registers 236 degrees F.

Remove the pan from the heat, leaving the thermometer in place, and let cool until the syrup registers 220 degrees F, 1 to 2 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, stir in the bacon and pecans. Working quickly, drop 1 tablespoon of pralines onto the prepared parchment-lined sheet pan. If the mixture starts to harden, place back on the stove over moderately-low heat and let it melt. Let the pralines sit until they harden, about 45 minutes.

So this past Sunday was Easter and I decided to check another box on my bucket list. I attended sunrise service on top of Stone Mountain. At its summit, the elevation is 825 feet above the surrounding area. They have a sky ride to the top but I chose to do the walk up. Why was this on my bucket list? Well, I just liked the idea of people coming together to celebrate the rising of Christ with the rising of the sun. And what better place to do it than on top of a mountain with a great view of the rising sun. It did not disappoint...

What a great experience. I look forward to attending again.

Eat My Meat(Loaf)

If you like meatloaf, you will LOVE this recipe. I found a basic meatloaf recipe online years ago and edited it to come up with this one. It really is great and I hope you guys will try it and let me know how you like it.

Bob Out's Meatloaf...

2 pounds ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 tsp minced garlic

1/2 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp mustard

1 tbs Worcestershire Sauce

3 tbs ketchup

1 1/2 tbs chopped fresh parsley

1 cup dry bread crumbs

1 egg

Mix all ingredients together and form into a loaf. I also add more ketchup to the top before baking but I know some people don't like that. So add as much to the top as you like or none at all.

Please a pan of hot water on the rack below the meatloaf and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour. The hot water keeps the extra moist and delicious.

I served it with Ina Garten's Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. Here's that recipe...

3 pounds boiling potatoes, peeled

1/2 cup milk

1 stick unsalted butter

3/4 to 1 cup buttermilk(depending on how thick you like them)

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water and 2 tablespoons of salt to a boil. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into 1 1/2-inch cubes and add them to the boiling water. Bring the water to a boil again, lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, until the potatoes fall apart easily when pierced with a fork.

Meanwhile, heat the milk and butter in a small saucepan, making sure it doesn't boil. Set aside until the potatoes are done.

As soon as the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander. Place in a bowl and mash with a potato masher. As soon as the potatoes are mashed, stir in the hot milk-and-butter mixture with a whisk or rubber spatula. Add enough buttermilk to make the potatoes creamy. Add 2 teaspoons of salt and the pepper, to taste, and serve hot.

YUMMY!
I really think the fresh parsley makes all the difference. You can also add chopped celery to it but I have so many friends with an aversion to celery that I typically don't add it anymore.

Turner Classic Movies Channel

I have a confession...

I am a very bad gay when it comes to watching older classic movies. For example, I don't think I had watched but just two movies made prior to 1970. Those were "Gone With The Wind" and "The Wizard Of Oz". However, that's all changed now thanks to the Turner Classic Movies channel.

Where have I been that I have never watched this channel? It's awesome! All of these movies are shown without commercial interruption. Who knew? Well, probably all of you did. I know I'm slow but I'm catching up. In the last couple of months I've seen four good movies...

I loved "The Way We Were" ...until the end. I understand he left Katie because the relationship was too complicated for HIM and he didn't like Katie's constant abrasiveness ...but did he have to abandon his daughter? That bugged me. Ya know, Hubbell...if you knocked Katie up you should have still payed child support and been there for your daughter. Oh wait, I guess it is just a movie, huh?

Of the four movies above, I really think "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" was my favorite. What a great movie! And damn, Paul Newman was SUPER hot back then wasn't he? WOW, He really had me a little moist for sure. He just exudes manliness...Growl!

I've also recorded two more that I will watch this week...

Other than the ones I've seen...Can you guys recommend an older movie circa 1970 or older that is a "can't miss"? I'd love to hear your opinions as to what I should be watching.

I Bought A New Car!

I bought a new car and it's a HYBRID! Take take oil prices!

I had been looking at trading my car for a used Prius. I love the Prius but they are very pricey...even for a used one. I was sitting in the Toyota dealership about to buy a 2007 used Prius with high mileage. The salesman was filling out my credit application and I suddenly just felt it was not the best move for me. I told him I was sorry and left the dealership. I decided I would just keep my SUV and deal with the gas prices.

When I pulled out of the dealership I saw a 0.9% financing at the Honda dealership so I pulled in on a whim and decided to see what kind of Hybrids they had. I discovered the 2011 Honda Insight and fell in love. This is a sharp car with a Hybrid engine very similar to the Prius. The best thing? This car gets GREAT gas mileage...over 40mpg in both City & Hwy! This 2011 Honda Insight was just $3,000 more than the 2007 Prius with high mileage. Two hours later I was driving off the lot with it and I love it! These are pics I found online. I would have taken personal pics but it's been raining so much here in Georgia that I haven't been able to get any good pics...but I will soon!

Chris Brown was furious over Robin's questions about the Rihanna incident two years ago. He reporidly smashed a window and stormed out.

Chris later tweeted: "I'm so over people bringing this past s--t up!!! Yet we praise Charlie Sheen and other celebs for there bulls--t."

I was pulling for Chris. He is SO DAMN TALENTED but he really needs some anger management classes. People are curious as to what happened between him and Rihanna so of course Robin is going to ask about that. Robin Robert's is saying that he even approved the questions prior to the interview. Damn dude, just tell what happened or simply say that was a bad incident that you are not proud of and you have been working on controlling your temper. However, after this incident it's clear to me that you haven't worked too hard on controlling that temper.

Irish Whiskey Cake(Happy St. Patty's Day!)

What's up Bitches! Hope you guys have a very happy St. Patrick's Day! Did you wear green today? This guy did just for you...

I made this Irish Whiskey Cake last night. It is so simple and so dang delicious. Here's the recipe...

1 box yellow cake mix

1 (3 ounce) box vanilla instant pudding mix

1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cups Irish whiskey
4 large eggs
1 cup copped black walnuts (or pecans)
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup Irish whiskey

1. Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan.
2. Stir together the cake mix and pudding mix.
3. In another bowl, mix oil , water and 1/2 cup of the whiskey. Stir the liquids into the dry mixture. With an electric mixer, beat in eggs, one at a time, at medium speed, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Then beat until smooth, about 2 more minutes. Stir in walnuts.
4. Turn batter into prepared pan. Bake in a preheated 325-degree oven until the cake is lightly browned and pulls away from the side of the pan, about 1 hour.
5. For the glaze, melt the butter in a saucepan add sugar. Bring to a boil take off heat and add 1/3 cup whiskey.

YUMMY!

If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything. First we banned Target for donating to a Minnesota Gubernatorial candidate that supported a ban on same sex marriage. Then we banned Chick Fil A for donating food to an organization that also supported that ban. And now comes word that The Razzie Awards are making a stand against the gay community. How? Did you see the nominations for worst supporting actress in a film? Of the five nominees, three are major gay icons...

1) Cher for "Burlesque"

3) Liza Minnelli for "Sex & The City 2"

What? I mean Liza didn't even have a performance in Sex & The City 2. She was just singing.

I just saw Jennifer Anniston on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" today. On the show she talked about her chance encounter with Perez Hilton who has developed a reputation as one of the nastiest celebrity bloggers...

"I ran into Perez Hilton in a garage. One of those moments you just never expect to happen. I had finished dinner with a girlfriend and we were driving out and I saw this tall, long, lean person and I say, "Who is that?" And she says, "I think that's Perez Hilton." I said, "No. I have to say something to him. I have to." So I pulled up and we were sort of scoping each other out as I was pulling the car up. I just rolled down the window and I was like, "Hi." And he went, "Hi." We stood there like two deer in headlights. And I just said, "Come here. Just talk to me for a second." It was one of those great moments. It was a lovely meeting and I was just like, "Why are you so mean?"

This got me to thinking... If we say nasty things about celebrities/policiticans like Oprah, Mel Gibson, Lindsey Lohan or Sarah Palin are we being bullies too? We can report facts and stories with our opinions on these people but shouldn't it end there? If we take it too far with name calling and pot shots, we are no better than anti gay bullies who taunt and make fun of us. Anniston said "even if it's for humor or effect or whatever, there's a human being behind all of that". I agree and I take a pledge beginning today that I will not bully anyone anymore. It's something to think about.

For the last few days the local news had been predicting "Winter's wrath" to hit last night. They said to prepare for six to eight inches. Uh, duh...you always have to prepare when you are expecting to get six to eight inches. Oh wait, what was I talking about? Oh yea, "Winter's wrath"! Here in Atlanta, we don't see much snow so when the news starts talking like snowmaggedon is about to happen, people start panicking. The stores were running out of bread & milk. The school systems were already closing in anticipation. I went to bed wondering if they were right and what do you know....they were!

I had to struggle to open the door to my townhome. I measured 5 inches of the white fluffy stuff. YAY!

John Edwards Engaged?

Former Presidential candiate and scum sucker, John Edwards, has gotten engaged according to the New York Times. John proposed to his girlfriend Rielle Hunter just three weeks after the death of his wife, Elizabeth Edwards. Elizabeth died on Decemember 7th after a long battle with cancer. Soon after the holiday engagement, It was reported that he then arranged for his children Cate, Jack and Emma Claire to meet Rielle for the first time.

This guy is a class act all the way(Where's that sarc mark when I need it?). Did anyone of you see the interview Rielle did with Oprah? She said John told her she was his soul mate and just weeks later he renewed his vows with Elizabeth because all along he had been telling her it was over with Rielle.

When I first saw the article on yahoo yesterday, it said according to the New York Times this was true. Now that seems to have change to according to the National Enquirer. Had I know that at the time I wouldn't have posted this. Although, they were the ones who originally broke the story that he was having the affair. I guess we will wait & see.

Oprah Winfrey Network

I have a new favorite channel thanks to Oprah. Her new network, OWN(Oprah Winfrey Network), hit the airwaves at noon on January 1st and I've barely turned it since. There are some seriously good shows y'all and still a lot more to come. Here are some of my favorites...

This is a cooking show with Cristine Ferrare. She brings in a celebrity and cooks with them. Great show!

Peter Walsh is a great organizer. This is basically like "Clean Sweep". He goes into people's homes that have a hoarding problem and helps get them to the root of the issue and then redoes their home.

This is a biography type show. It's a little different than other biography shows because it's just the person talking about their background and career. So far they have featured Jay-Z and Diane Sawyer.

I love the Oprah show! This is a behind the scenes look at how the producers pull it all together.

This show doesn't start until Monday but I am so excited. I love me some Gayle King. This show is filmed during her wildly popular radio show. It will also be a live show which should be interesting.

I also love the fact that they replay old episodes of Trading Spaces. I can't tell you how addicted I was to that show. It's great to see some of the originals with Ty, Frank, Paige, Doug and the other designers.

The network will start adding more and more shows. Some that are coming up include reality type shows from The Judds, Shania Twain & Sarah Ferguson. There will also be one with Ryan & Tatum O'Neal. They will be trying to repair their VERY rocky relationship. Did you know Ryan hit on Tatum during Farah's funeral. He just saw her from behind and didn't realize it was her. What a scum! It's like a train wreck, you can't look away.

Also coming up will be shows from Rosie O'Donnell & Oprah will also headline one which will start once her show ends in September. It won't be like her show now, it will just be a series of interview only type shows. I'll be watching. Have you guys checked it out yet? Thoughts?

Oprah: Love Her? Hate Her?

I was getting ready to do a whole post on the new Oprah Winfrey Network(which I LOVE). Then I saw another negative comment about Oprah on someone's facebook page(Hey Michael). Since I began blogging, I've seen quite a few negative things written about her. It got me to thinking...why do people hate her so much? I still love Oprah. Sure, she can get a little annoying sometimes but who can't? However, it seems that most people either love her or hate her. If you do hate her, it seems the hate runs deep. It makes me wonder If I missed something. Did she do something specific to make you hate her? So I am going to hold off on my Oprah network post and just ask ....

If you are one of the haters, Why do you hate Oprah?

I love Oprah because she is very pro LGBT. In my opinion, she has done a lot to show that we are just like everyone else. There is no other show on daytime TV that covers LGBT issues like she does. When her show is gone, we still have entertainment shows but not one like hers. She is also a great philanthropist.

Best Restaurant Discovery...

Holy cow, Y'all...if you are ever in Atlanta you must eat here! It's not authentic Mexican, it's not Tex Mex, it's like Southwestern/Southern/Mexican. I just call it damn good food! You can visit their website by clicking here. There is one dish not listed on the menu, it's a combo of beans, rice & turnip greens called "The George". If you visit, make sure you ask for it. SO.DAMN.GOOD!

Best Movie...

"Black Swan"? Nope! "The Kids Are All Right"? Nope! "Social Network"? Nope! Nothing against those movies but the # 1 movie of 2010 to me has to be "Toy Story 3". This movie is far from than just an animated kids movie. It touches so deeply. I would even go so far as to say it deserves the Oscar for best movie of the year. It was also the #1 grossing movie of the year with over $ 415,000,000 domestically. WOW!

Best Song...

Michael Buble' "Haven't Met You Yet". I LOVE.LOVE.LOVE this song. It really describes what I'm singing daily to my future husband that I haven't met yet.

There was no better video. PERIOD! I mean Lady Gaga & Beyonce together in a super fun & campy video, what could be better? TOO GOOD FOR WORDS!

Best TV Show...

I love a lot of shows like "Glee , "How I Met Your Mother" and "Modern Family" but "The Middle" edges them all out as my favorite. This show is just so damn funny and reminds me of my life growing up. Patricia Heaton is pitch perfect as the typical suburban mom.

Best NEW TV Show...

If you are not watching "Raising Hope"...why the hell not? Stop whatever you are doing and set your Tivo/DVR. It comes on right after Glee and I know you guys are watching Glee. Stay tuned and check this show out. It is hysterical! And Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw is beyond fantastic and will crack your ass up.

Pat Robertson: Snow Is God's Way of Punishing Americans Who Were Planning to Drive to Do Something Gay

Rev. Pat Robertson sparked controversy in today's broadcast of his 700 Club program when he claimed that God created the blizzard currently battering the Northeast "to punish Americans who were planning to drive to do something gay."

Explaining his theory, Rev. Robertson said, "Because of the bad road conditions the Almighty has made, any gay activities that people were planning on doing will have to be postponed by a day or two."

Additionally, he argued, God shut down major airports in the New York area "so that people who were hoping to fly to do something of a gay nature would have to take a train or a bus, so it might be days before the gay thing they were going to do could occur."

As for the millions of straight people in New York City who were also grounded by the bad weather, the televangelist said, "I think God probably wonders, if these people are really straight, then what are they doing in New York?"

I hope you guys all had a very Merry Christmas. Here in the ATL we received our first white Christmas in 128 years!

My friend took this pic on her deck. Isn't it beautiful! I told her I may have to steal it and use it as my Christmas card next year. I love the green bird feeder with the red birds coming in to feed. So pretty!

Christmas day is also my birthday, so it was super nice to have it snow. It just made the day feel even more special. I turned 42 this year, that's dead in single gay man years. Ugh! At least I'm still cute. Haha j/k

Stem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'

On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

Brown's case paves a path for constructing a permanent cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.

Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

While these developments by no means prove a cure for the virus has been found, they can certainly provide hope for the more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. Alongside such findings, global efforts to combat the epidemic have accelerated as of late, with new initiatives emerging in the Philippines and South Africa this week.

Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Politics and gay activism were not his early interests; he was not open about his homosexuality and did not participate in civic matters until around age 40, after his experiences in the counterculture of the 1960s.

Milk moved from New York City to settle in San Francisco in 1972 amid a migration of gay men to the Castro District. He took advantage of the growing political and economic power of the neighborhood to promote his interests, and ran unsuccessfully for political office three times. His theatrical campaigns earned him increasing popularity, and Milk won a seat as a city supervisor in 1977, part of the broader social changes the city was experiencing.

Milk served 11 months in office and was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. On November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned but wanted his job back. Milk's election was made possible by and was a key component of a shift in San Francisco politics. The assassinations and the ensuing events were the result of continuing ideological conflicts in the city.

Despite his short career in politics, Milk became an icon in San Francisco and "a martyr for gay rights", according to University of San Francisco professor Peter Novak. In 2002, Milk was called "the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States". Anne Kronenberg, his final campaign manager, wrote of him: "What set Harvey apart from you or me was that he was a visionary. He imagined a righteous world inside his head and then he set about to create it for real, for all of us. Natalee Holloway

As most of you have heard, on Nov. 12th a jawbone with one intact molar was found on a beach outside a hotel in Aruba. The jawbone was later confirmed to be that of a young woman. A few days later , dental records for Natalee Holloway were sent to Aruba authorities. Today those authorities have confirmed that the jawbone did NOT belong to Natalee. For her family, the not knowing must be excruciating. In any death, the pain never goes away but I can't imagine not knowing what happened to my child. There is no semblance of closure and the opportunity to grieve properly and move on.

Natalee Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. She was scheduled to fly home later on May 30, but did not show up for her flight home. She was last seen by her classmates outside a nightclub in a car with Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. When questioned, the three men said they dropped her off at her hotel and denied knowing what happened to her after that.

There have been several arrest through the years and subsequent releases due to lack of evidence. Most notably, Joran van der Sloot. He is such a DOUCHE BAG! I mean he is such a major case for me believing in capital punishment. On November 24, 2008, On the Record aired an interview with Van der Sloot in which he alleged that he sold Holloway into sexual slavery. He said he received money when Holloway was taken, and later on to keep quiet. Van der Sloot also alleged he paid the Kalpoe brothers for their assistance, and that his father paid off two police officers who had learned that Holloway was taken to Venezuela. He later retracted the statements made in the interview.

This year he tried to extort money from Natalee's mom, Beth. She informed the FBI and they set up a sting. Joran was paid $10,000 cash and wired $15,000 to an account in the Netherlands, where he lived. They were to pay the remainder of the $ 250,000 after he gave told them where they could find Natalee's remains. He gave false information and was later charged with extortion and wire fraud. He later admitted the extortion saying "I wanted to get back at Natalee's family — her parents have been making my life tough for five years".

On May 30, 2010, Stephany Ramirez was reported missing in Lima, Peru. That is five years to the day that Natalee Holloway was reported missing. Her body was found three days later in a hotel room registered to Joran van der Sloot. He was since charged with her murder and currently sits in a prison in Peru. He originally confessed to this murder but has since retracted the confession. I hope he rots there in that prison. I actually hope he is severely tortured during his time there. He deserves it!

That's So Gay: The Labrys

I hate it when people use the phrase "That's so gay" in a negative way. It's usually used to describe something tacky or tasteless. I've decided to take the phrase back and make it positive. This is the fifth in a series of posts I am doing about all things gay. This one is for all my Lesbian peeps out there. Leave it to the Lesbians to have such a butch symbol. They are not to be messed with. I keep one around for protection at all times. Hehe j/k

The Labrys

The labrys is less popular now that it once was, even though its connection to lesbianism and women began thousands of years ago. The labrys is basically a double bladed axe or hatchet which can be used for both harvesting and as a weapon. The first labrys is believed to have been created over 8,000 years ago. It was favored by tribes of female Amazons that roamed the area around what is now Kazakstan in central Asia. It has also been linked to the early town of Catal Huyuk in what is now Turkey around 6,000 BCE as a tool for clearing ground. Catal Huyuk was a peaceful town which worshipped the Earth goddess and prospered without conflict for 1,500 years.

An ancient civilization on the island Crete in the Mediterranean Sea also held the labrys in high standing. Little was known about the Minoan civilization (it lasted from around 3,000 to 1,100 BCE) except myths until archaeologists began excavating relics from Crete's pre-Minoan era around the beginning of the 20th century. The most amazing discovery on the island was the palace of Knossos, believed to be the royal palace, along with a 35,000 square foot maze of rooms and hallways. This maze was prolifically decorated with a double-axe motif, especially the principal reception room. The term labyrinth is derived from labrys. This site is believed to be linked to the myth of the minotaur.

The Minoan society, although possessing both a king and queen near its end, was predominantly matriarchal. Their religion centered around a bare-breasted Great Goddess who is believed to have been a protector of women. This goddess is often shown holding snakes in her hands, a symbol of fertility and agriculture, and surrounded by female worshippers with double axes which were used for tilling soil. Preserved frescos from the time period also tend to show more girls than boys, usually in such dangerous sports as bull jumping (bulls were also a reoccurring theme in Minoan art).

The double axe quickly spread across Europe, becoming popular with the Etruscans, the Gauls, the Druids, and the Scandinavians. The labrys kept its religious connotation even when it was adopted by other cultures, having been scratched into a good many surfaces during pagan times. When the Roman Empire came along, the plow replaced the labrys as far as farming went, but it remained a formidable weapon. The labrys began to be seen less and less religiously, and soon took on the name "battleaxe" instead. From there it was passed through successive generations of war-torn Europe until it was replaced in popularity by the sword.

The labrys was resurrected as a female symbol in the 1970s by a number of lesbian and feminist organizations. It's popularity grew when articles about its origins were published in feminist literature of the time. Dreams really do come true! Here's how it happened...

So I am sitting at my desk talking to my co-worker and GREAT friend, Linda. We are talking about all of our upcoming plans. Somehow I brought up Cher. Well, I bring up Cher a lot. Yep, I'm a good gay!
I said one of my dreams is to see Cher perform live. Linda then said, we should go see her in Vegas.
Sure, I said. How are we gonna pull that off? I laughed thinking it wasn't a real suggestion. Linda then says, "I have a contact that has been trying to get me to come out". "He said if I would visit Las Vegas for potential groups he would get me tickets to any show I wanted". "I'll go call him now." She comes back 10 minutes later and he has come through. TWO FREE TICKETS TO SEE CHER AT CESAR'S PALACE! Not just any tickets....10 rows back ..center stage! WHAT? OMG!

I work for a travel agency and Linda is our group coordinator. She has a lot of contacts in Vegas and has been often. Vegas is a mega convention and meeting destination. We had three groups there this year. I have the tickets to see Cher. Now, how am I gonna get to Vegas?

I must say working for a travel agency has had it's perks in the past but those perks have dried up a lot. In the "old days" I would travel all the time for free. I've been fortunate to have traveled a lot. However, in the past five years I've barely gone anywhere. Delta had gotten so strict that it became almost impossible to get free tickets anymore. Last year I won two Delta first class international tickets but was unable to use them because the class of service they had to be booked in was so restrictive. I decided to call and ask for free tickets to Vegas. I received the certificate and BAM, I was approved for two free tickets AND the space was available. OMG, Are the gay fairy gods smiling on me right now?

Today, Linda comes to me and tells me Cesar's screwed up getting one of her groups this year. They were bummed that they had lost the group and have been courting her to get the group for 2012. She called and said she wanted to come out and do a site inspection. They gave her a suite for the two days we will be there...TOTALLY FREE!

That's So Gay: The Lambda

The Lambda

One symbol which continues to remain popular is the lower case Greek letter lambda. The symbol was originally chosen by the Gay Activists Alliance of New York in 1970. The GAA was a group which broke away from the larger Gay Liberation Front at the end of 1969, only six months after it's foundation in response to the Stonewall Riots. While the GLF wanted to work side by side with the black and women's liberation movements to gain unity and acceptance, the GAA wanted to focus their efforts more concisely on only Gay and Lesbian issues.

Because of its official adoption by the GAA, which sponsored public events for the gay community, the lambda soon became a quick way for the members of the gay community to identify each other. The reasoning was that the lambda would easily be mistaken for a college fraternity symbol and ignored by the majority of the population. Eventually though, the GAA headquarters was torched by an arsonist, destroying not only the building but all of the organization's records, and the movement never recovered from the loss. The symbol, however, lived on.

Now what the symbol means or meant when it was introduced are a prime topic for speculation and a morass of public rumoring. Some of the more popular rumors are:

*Simply, the Greek letter "L" stands for "liberation."

*The Greek Spartans believed that the lambda represented unity.

*The Romans took it as meaning "the light of knowledge shining into the darkness of ignorance."

*The charged energy of the gay movement. This stems from the lambda's use in chemistry and physics to denote energy in equations.

*The synergy which results when gays and lesbians work together towards a common goal (a gestalt theory which also stems from the physics-energy theory).

*The notion that straights and gays, or gays and lesbians, or any pairing of these three, are on different wavelengths when it comes to sex, sexuality, or even brain patterns. This again comes from the lambda's presence in chemistry and physics, where it is sometimes used to represent the wavelength of certain types of energy.

*An iconic rendering of the scales of justice and the constant force that keeps opposing sides from overcoming each other. The hook at the bottom of the right leg would then signify the action and initiative needed to reach and maintain balance.

*The lambda is also though by some to have appeared on the shields of Spartan and/or Theben warriors. The Thebes version is more popular because, as legend has it, the city- state organized the Theban Band from groups of idealized lovers, which made them extremely fierce and dedicated warriors. Eventually however, the army was completely decimated by Kind Philip II, but was later honored by his son Alexander the Great.

There is no actual evidence though that the lambda was ever associated with this group. However, there was Hollywood movie in the 1962s called "The 300 Spartans" starring Diane Baker, Richard Egan, and Ralph Richardson that showed Spartan warriors who appeared to have lambdas on their shields.

Whatever the lambda meant or means today, it's everywhere. Even though at one time it acquired a strictly male connotation, it is used by both gays and lesbians today. Back in December of 1974, the lambda was officially declared the international symbol for gay and lesbian rights by the International Gay Rights Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland.(information contained in this blog taken directly from www.lambda.org)

Conversations with My Teenage Self

I am stealing this idea from my fellow blog buddy, Little Miss Sunshine State. This was hard to write and got really emotional. Here are the five things I would tell my teenage self....

1- Your father let drugs & alcohol keep him from being a real father. That is not your fault. It was his decision or his addiction that kept him from being the father you wanted. Don't dwell on the fact that you didn't have a good father like your friends did. Be thankful for the amazing people you have in your life. Don't hate your father either. Just feel sorry for him. It really was his loss.

2- Forgive your mother. She makes a lot of mistakes but she is human and you know she loves you. She doesn't do a lot of things like you would like her to but that's just who she is. You will learn that as an adult you will make a lot of mistakes yourself. Accept her for the love and support she has given you through the years and not her mistakes. You've let her down a lot too! REMEMBER, we're all human...even your mother! She was there for everything and that matters A LOT.

3- You are not too busy to spend time with those you love. You've had some great role models in your life. Aunt Eliza, Aunt Gertrude, Uncle Albert & Maw Maw/Paw Paw. They are amazing people. You loved spending time with them when you were younger. Now that you are driving and want to hang with your friends, don't use that as an excuse not to still spend time with them. One day....way too soon they will be gone and you will wish you had that time to do all over again.

4- You are gay! Praying and dating women will not change that. Accept yourself. Be Bold! Being gay is not an abomination to God. He loves you just the way you are. Live your life, BE FREE.

5- September 16, 1985 will change your world forever. On Sunday, September 15th, your sister will come to visit you at work. She is the polar opposite of you. She wears leather and drives a motorcycle and you are "Mr. Preppy". When she pulls up and your friends and co-workers see her, you are scared they will find out she is your sister. You go outside hoping they won't see you talking to her. She asks if you want to go see a movie. You decline because you are embarrassed by her appearance. The next day she dies in a motorcycle accident. You will regret not going to that movie with her for the rest of your life. You have cried and cried and still cry about it. It will be the biggest regret of your life. That was your sister and you loved her with all your heart. You will learn that the diversity in people is what makes the world a really cool place. You should have learned it sooner! If you get that day back...run outside when you see her...hug her for as long as you can and when she asks if you want to go see that movie , say YES! YES! YES!

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are frequently cited as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

American gays and lesbians in the 1950s and 1960s faced a legal system more anti-homosexual than those of some Warsaw Pact countries. Early homophile groups in the U.S. sought to prove that gay people could be assimilated into society, and they favored non-confrontational education for homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. The last years of the 1960s, however, were very contentious, as many social movements were active, including the African American Civil Rights Movement ,the Counterculture of the 1960s, and antiwar demonstrations. These influences, along with the liberal environment of Greenwich Village, served as catalysts for the Stonewall riots.

Very few establishments welcomed openly gay people in the 1950s and 1960s. Those that did were often bars, although bar owners and managers were rarely gay. The Stonewall Inn, at the time, was owned by the Mafia. It catered to an assortment of patrons, but it was known to be popular with the poorest and most marginalized people in the gay community: drag queens, and representatives of a newly self-aware transgender community, effeminate young men, hustlers, and homeless youth. Police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, but officers quickly lost control of the situation at the Stonewall Inn, and attracted a crowd that was incited to riot. Tensions between New York City police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening, and again several nights later. Within weeks, Village residents quickly organized into activist groups to concentrate efforts on establishing places for gays and lesbians to be open about their sexual orientation without fear of being arrested.

After the Stonewall riots, gays and lesbians in New York City faced gender, class, and generational obstacles to becoming a cohesive community. Within six months, two gay activist organizations were formed in New York, concentrating on confrontational tactics, and three newspapers were established to promote rights for gays and lesbians. Within a few years, gay rights organizations were founded across the U.S. and the world. On June 28, 1970, the first Gay Pride marches took place in Los Angeles and New York commemorating the anniversary of the riots. Similar marches were organized in other cities. Today, Gay Pride events are held annually throughout the world toward the end of June to mark the Stonewall riots.

Hey Guys, Just wanted to pop in and wish you guys a Happy Halloween. Are you guys doing anything to celebrate the holiday? Last night I went to a nice little gathering held by my friend Sonya. She made a delicious spread of appetizers...

Lots of goodness...caramel apples, spiced pecans, pesto dip, chips & salsa, sausage balls and a bacon/pumpkin dip made by my friend Bunny. I made a pumpkin cake(no picture-dang it) and swamp water...

This ugliness is actually quite tasty. I found the recipe online and decided to try it because it was very festive and easy to make. You just mix 7 cups of orange juice with pulp, 750ml of vodka & 3/4 of a 2 liter bottle of Dr. Pepper(I used diet). Sounds disgusting but it was GREAT!. I filled a latex glove with water and froze it to make the ice. Very Martha, don't ya think?

Ooops, some of the fingers came off. hehe! That's me and Sonya having a little fun with ice.

Did Gretchen really just win Project Runway? OMG! I have to know...did you guys like her collection?
I didn't at all! I thought it was very bland. Mondo should have won. However, I didn't like those damn head pieces he designed. Maybe if he had canned those his collection wouldn't have looked as costumy(is that a word?) to Michael and Nina. Who knows? I guess they know more about fashion than me. I am just soooo disappointed. This was the best season yet(to me)... until this.

That's So Gay: The Pink Triangle

The Pink Triangle

The story behind the pink triangle begins prior to World War II. Paragraph 175, a clause in German law, prohibited homosexual relations. In 1935, during Hitler's rise to power, he extended this law to include homosexual kissing, embracing, and even having homosexual fantasies. An estimated 25,000 people were convicted under this law between 1937 and 1939 alone. They were sent to prisons and later concentration camps. Their sentence also included sterilization, most commonly in the form of castration. In 1942, Hitler extended the punishment for homosexuality to death.

Prisoners in Nazi concentration camps were labeled according to their crimes by inverted colored triangles. "Regular" criminals were denoted by a green triangle, political prisoners by red triangles and Jews by two overlapping yellow triangles (to form the Star of David, the most common Jewish symbol). Homosexual prisoners were labels with pink triangles. Gay Jews- the lowest form of prisoner- had overlapping yellow and pink triangles. This system also created a social hierarchy among the prisoners, and it has been reported that the pink triangle prisoners often received the worst workloads and were continually harassed and beaten by both guards and other prisoners.

Although homosexual prisoners were not shipped en mass to the Auschwitz death camps like so many of the Jewish prisoners, there were still large numbers of gay men executed there along with other non-Jewish prisoners. The real tragedy though occurred after the war. When the Allies defeated the Germany and the Nazi Regime, the political and remaining Jewish prisoners were released from the camps (the regular criminals- murderers, rapists, etc.- were not released for obvious reasons). The homosexual prisoners were never released though because Paragraph 175 remained West German law until 1969. So these innocent men watched as their fellow prisoners were set free, but remained prisoners for 24 more years.

In the 1970s, the pink triangle started to be used in conjunction with the gay liberation movement. When people, especially public figures such as law makers, were confronted with such a symbol, they risked being associated with the Nazis if he or she were to attempt to openly limit or prosecute gays. In the 1980s, when the triangle's popularity truly began to take off, ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) adopted it as their symbol, but turned it upright to suggest an active fight rather than passive resignation. I've also been told that some people wear their triangles pointing up if they personally know somebody who has tied of AIDS. In any case, the pink triangle is definitely a symbol very closely connected to oppression and the fight against it, and stands as a vow never to let another Holocaust happen again. Like the word "queer," it is a symbol of hate which has been reclaimed and now stands for pride.(Information taken from www.lambda.org)

That's So Gay: The Rainbow Pride Flag

I hate it when people use the phrase "That's so gay" in a negative way. It's usually used to describe something tacky or tasteless. I've decided to take the phrase back and make it positive. This is the first in a series of posts I will do about all things gay.

I have to admit I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to gay culture, symbols and landmark events. My lack of knowledge is what enticed me to want to do these posts. Do you know where the rainbow flag started and why? Do you know what Stonewall was all about? The origins of the pink triangle? If not, I hope you find these blogs as informative as I have researching them.

That's So Gay: The Rainbow Pride Flag

The Rainbow Flag as we know it today was developed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. At the time, there was a need for a gay symbol which could be used year after year for the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade. Baker took inspiration from many sources, from the hippies movement to the black civil rights movement, and came up with a flag with eight stripes. Color has always played an important power in the gay right movement- Victorian England symbolized homosexuality with the color green, lavender became popular in the 1960s, and and pink from the pink triangle has caught on as well- and the colors of the gay flag were no different. Baker explained that his colors each stood for a different aspect of gay and lesbian life:

Hot pink for sexuality,
Red for life,
Orange for healing,
Yellow for the sun,
Green for nature,
Blue for art,
Indigo for harmony,
Violet for spirit.

Baker himself and thirty other volunteers hand-stitched and hand-dyed to large prototype flags for the 1978 parade. It was an immediate hit. However, when Baker took his design to the San Francisco Flag Co. to have it mass-produced for the 1979 parade, he had to remove the hot pink stripe. Baker had hand-dyed the color, and unfortunately pink was not a commercially available color.

Later that year, when the city's first openly gay supervisor, Harvey Milk, was assassinated, the 1979 Pride Parade Committee found in Baker's flag the perfect symbol for the entire gay community to unite under in protest of this tragedy. The committee got rid of the indigo stripe to make the colors evenly divisible along the parade route: red, orange, and yellow on one side of the street; green, blue, and purple on the other. (This version also conforms to traditional color theory- the three primary colors and three secondary colors in art- rather than the spectrum of light colors of R O Y G B I V. Thus, today's six-color flag was born and displayed during the 1979 Pride Parade.

The flag quickly caught on like wildfire in cities across the country. It was even officially recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers. In 1989 the flag was given international recognition when West Hollywood resident John Stout successfully sued his landlords after they tried to prohibit him from hanging the flag from his apartment balcony. At New York's Stonewall 25 Parade in 1994, a gigantic 30-foot wide, one mile long rainbow flag was carried through the parade route by over 10,000 volunteers.

As with any symbol, the varieties that the rainbow flag currently comes in are limitless. When large rainbow flags were first carried along parade routes with the carriers at the corners and along the sides, they found that people along the parade route with throw change into convenient valley created in the flag's center. At first, some people in the gay community took offense to this- they didn't want people to feel that they were pitiable and in need of charity. But movements cannot exist on spirit alone, so many organizations took to this occurrence with enthusiasm and the practice continues to this day.

Mel Gibson cameo cut from "The Hangover 2"

Mel Gibson was supposed to make a cameo appearance in "The Hangover 2". Then today I read that his cameo has been cut from the film. The director, Todd Phillips, said this..." I thought Mel would have been great in the movie but I realize film making is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew".

Zack Galifianakis who plays Alan Garner in the film was rumored to be upset about the decision to cast Gibson in the cameo. Hmmmm, I agree with anyone that is upset about working with Mel Gibson especially lately. However, wasn't Mike Tyson in the first film? Come on Zack, if you have no problem working with a wife beater and convicted rapist, then working with Mel shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Now, don't take this blog as me supporting Mel Gibson because I don't! He's had a lot of despicable behavior lately. It just seems odd that you would work with Mike Tyson but not Mel... I'm just sayin!

Mr. C from "Happy Days" has died at the age of 83. He had been battling lung cancer but died from heart failure. After "Happy Days" ended he went on to play the lovable crime stopping priest on "Father Dowling Mysteries" as well guest appearances on other shows.

Christina Aguilera has seperated from her husband of five years, Jordan Bratman. Yesterday she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Today the rumor mill has started to turn that Christina and Sam Ronson are a couple. The two were spotted in Cabo last month. They were there for a girls weekend to celebrate Nicole Richie's 29th birthday.

Sources are saying that there was already trouble in Christina's marriage but this weekend with Sam sealed the deal. She leaned on Sam for support and ended up falling in love with her. In the kitchen with Bob Out: C is for Cookie

I've done a couple of "In the kitchen with Bo's Bowl" post but thought I would do a recipe from my own kitchen. I am famous around my office and the Humane Society for making cookies. This really is a great recipe and everyone loves them. I use the base recipe to make a lot of different varities. This one is for Peanut Butter...

Ingrediants for base recipe:
2 sticks unsalted butter-softened
3/4 cup granular sugar
3/4 packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tlbs milk
1 tsp vanilla flavoring
2 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder

Directions:
Mix softened butter with granular & light brown sugar until creamy. Then add the eggs, milk, vanilla flavoring and beat just until all combined. In a seperate bowl combine the flour, baking powder & salt. Then add the flour mixture into the butter and sugar mixture.

At this point you add the ingrediants for the type of cookie you want to make.

For this recipe...

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup salted cocktail peanuts

I added the peanut butter to the butter/sugar mixture before I added the dry ingrediants. Then once combined the wet & dry ingrediants, I added the salted cocktail peanuts.

Try these variations using the same base mixture...

1 12oz pkg of semi-sweet chocolate chips & 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans or walnuts

1 12oz pkg of white chocolate chips & 1 1/2 cups chopped macadamia nuts

1 1/2 cups of crasins & 1 cup chopped almonds(subsitute almond extract for the vanilla extract in the base mixture)

Baking...

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.

Scoop out a tlbs of batter and dropped on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for appox 13 minutes or until slighlty golden brown.

Serve with a big glass of milk & enjoy!
